Fleabag is for anyone and here is why.

img_20190414_151008_919-1484331977.jpg

A response piece to Ellen E Jones’s article in the Guardian on the 20th April ’19 @MsEllenEJones

Ellen starts her article by telling everyone that Fleabag is only for posh girls and I have a huge problem with that.

Firstly I am not a posh girl and I loved Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag.

Unlike Ellen I could relate, I felt and I understood her work despite not having a huge bank balance.

Secondly by telling women or anyone for that matter that something is not for them is excluding them from it.
It puts people down, it puts them off watching it, it tells women they are not good enough, not smart or rich enough to understand what another woman from a wealthy background has to say. Well it is for them and I call bullshit on your bullshit.

We should be encouraging each other to see every kind of women in every kind of job.

I believe that we should see and hear from the complete spectrum of women in media but she doesn’t back up her point with any reasonable reason. It’s just an attack on the writers wealth and it does take away from how well written and acted it is and it is just wrong to do that.

Yes we need to see other types of women succeed in writing, in film and everywhere but we should also supporting the ones who make it and who are there and not under estimate who can relate to them. You never know who could see this and aspire to write, to create, to act or even have their own issues validated and seek help.

This article reads like when you read the back of a book and try to write a whole book review. She missed all the good parts and any of the real emotions, issues and plot. Her last point about the step mother proves that.

A posh women’s experiences are still experiences and are valid. Please do not let us undervalue each other’s voices like this, we need to grow and learn to help one another grow.

I just don’t understand how losing a beloved friend or having family problems, fucking up, heartbreak and not knowing where you are going in life is not universally relatable.

We all experience these things in life despite what we have in our banks.

Big house to look forward to or not.

Money is not a cure all. It provides many a privilege but rarely does it solve mental health issues, relieve a broken heart or lessen the pain of losing someone you love.

The Joy of Painting large scale watercolours.

Recently I have been able to upgrade my materials a little bit.

I bought some lovely Squirrel Mop brushes available at https://www.cassart.co.uk

and I LOVE them.

If you are a watercolour artist you should have at least one in your kit honestly you will love it!

I also got some Hot pressed watercolour paper by Fabiano Artistico and I even splurged in some more beautiful watercolours and with that it brought more excitment more experimentation in my work and has taken me to new places, and by new I mean? Big places.

I am scaling up ( who knows where it will stop) and feeling more free with my expression than ever before because of it.

I am loving making huge flower shapes and watching the paint saturate the paper on this scale with spring flowers. I love the feeling of being dwarfed by nature and surrounded by a home made and super sized garden. I could almost be in Paris surrounded by Monets waterlilies which are and forever will be a beautiful and powerful inspiration in my work.

Spring Sun! Painting fun.

Working on this large scale abstract Poppy painting at the momemt and love working in super larhe scale with watercolours. So freeing.

I am feeling the spring sun starting to warm up the art room at last too

March meet the maker 2019 by wontbemist

Day 31 { product in use/wild }

#marchmeetthemaker
@joannehawker

All my scarves in the 4 bold colourways looking pretty with the spring daffies in Perth.
This reminds me of the first sculpture I ever made in Langass woods with Ann and my primary school when I was very little in North uist.

Well! what better way to end March meet the maker than with a bit of nostalgia.

It has been really good fun and has made me think so much about my practice and what it means to me.

I have loved seeing the other makers who have taken part and have found some new favourites through the month.
Same time next year? πŸ˜† πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

Day 30 { Support }

#marchmeethemaker

My husband, my friends and family have all supported me and my work so much and without them I don’t know what I would do.
As well as them the other wonderful artists, makers and designers, the galleries and shops that have bought and sell my work help support me and my deam.
It all helps you to drive forward and to keep creating fun and interesting new work.
It is like I said in my past posts, believe in yourself and what you do and just go for it!
You wont believe what happens next and who will cheer you on πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

Day 29 { Most difficult make }
#marchmeetthemaker
@joannehawker

I think whatever is new is the most difficult make for me as I figure out the right way to do things. Right now I am working on a bags design that goes with these scarfs and trying to make them perfect.
Choosing the right fabric the right shape and even knowing what needle to use in sewing machine. So far I have broke two but its all learning right?πŸ˜†

Day 28 {Packaged}
I think making up an order and making it look lovely is one of the best bits of what I do. I like to write a personal note and a thank you to the customer for taking the time to shop with me because it means so much . Its because of them I am able to do what I love πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™
Day 27 { Anything goes }
Playing Catch up this morning with #marchmeetthemaker
@joannehawker
These are my new patterns. What do you all think? I would love some feedback.
I love the bright blocky colours and in the Faux silk it looks and feels amazing!
No photo description available.
Day 26 { Self care }

This is an interesting one I had to look this up. “Self Care is the actions that individuals take for themselves, on behalf of and with others in order to develop, protect, maintain and improve their health, well being or wellness”

I would say creating is a huge part of this for me. It helps me grow and learn and that brings with it much fulfilment. Enjoying other artists work is also part of this.
I have many ways in which I care for myself and I know I am very lucky to be able to do that.
I love to run it makes feel wide awake and ready to create and I get to be outside and enjoy nature which is my total inspiration.
Travelling, I love to travel and see new places and explore and people watch. Visiting galleries and museum is a must for me.
Movies! The cinema and films is the one place I can totally switch off from my life and delve into someone else’s world.
I think we are all guilty of doing too much and not knowing when to just stop and relax and spend time with people we love, however saying that I know that there are many many people with far more hectic and stressful lives than mine.

With jobs and families to juggle on top of making and creating, so hats off to all of you! And please take a rest and time for you when you can 😘😘😘.

Day 25 { How its made }
#marchmeetthemaker
Its made by me!
I start by painting and thinking about colours.I edit them on photoshop etc and make repeats, prints and cards etc
The patterns I design are printed to make the products.
I sew and make every item here in my home studio in Perth.
I also make all the polymer clay brooches and earrings by hand.

Day 24 { Customers and feedback }

The whole reason I can do this part time is because of the people who support and buy my work. So you are all hugely important to me even if you like or share a post it means everything so a big heartfelt thank you to you all πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™ (Feedback)
Feedback is so so important and when someone takes the time to send a thank you or a note telling me they love it! It is absoloute magic!
I love hearing what people think or suggest and I have had so many helpful tips hints and suggestions and always love to hear more x

Day 23 { Tips & Advice }

1. Dedicate time towards what you want to do. Time and effort really payoff.

2. Have set out plans and ideas, try not to just jump in without knowing what your doing. I have wasted materials and time doing just that.

3. Learn your trade. Watch tutorials, take lessons, look to other who do this.
4. Be confident in your vision and what you create. If you don’t believe its unlikely anyone else will.
5.Meet lots of like minds and creative people. Ask them about their practice. They will help you more than you can ever imagine.
6. Use the best tools you can afford, they really make such a difference. (Not saying that you can’t create beautiful work on a budget because you definitely can) However upgrading to professional materials where you can will make you feel differently about what you do (treating it like your job rather than a hobby). It has totally changed the way I work and how it feels when I create. Treat yourself to that special brush, those slightly more expensive watercolours or a special kind of paper.
7. Be aware of the waste you produce, look for eco and sustainable alternatives where possible, recycle. We want to be able to keep creating so lets work together on making our practice cleaner.
8. Go for it! You can do this!

Day 22 { Proud of }
This is a difficult one for me, so much so that I put it off yesterday but I am proud of many things within my work.I always said if just one person spends money and has enjoyment from something I have created then I am doing something right and this year has been so much more than that.
My work and my passion for art has made huge leaps in the last few years. I am dedicated to my practice, I paint and make everyday.
My work with textiles and my new collections of work and prints.I am super proud of this new set of colourful vibrant scarves and will have matching products with them soon too that I am super excited about showing you all.

Day 19 { Dream collaboration }
I have two dream collaborations!
My dream collaboration

No:1 is @vivetta I adore the design work that goes into every piece, the beautiful addition of illustation like drawings, the work on the stitching and applique, the colours and textiles.I find the work to be really forward thinking, beautiful, fresh and interesting.
I would love πŸ’™ love to make a textile repeat for use on a piece. They are so inspiring and every time I see a newollection it makes me happy and inspired. If I could own every single outfit I would πŸ’– The design is just so sooo good.
Dream collaboration No:2 is @starfish_projectI would love to work with them in anyway really. The work they do is beyond amazing and I am so happy that they care and put love into doing important work and giving women new lives.
I would love to Design something for their packaging or stationary or make a textile piece where the proceeds go to @starfish_project or even maybe in connection with a giveaway or competition where you could win a piece of mine designed for them. πŸ’™

Day 18 {Mistake or lesson}#marchmeetthemaker
I don’t believe in mistakes when it comes to art.
I have had many a great lesson taught from a happy accident or a painting made from its flaws.
Sometime it takes a few goes to get something perfect.

What would be the point if it was easy?

Watercolour prints
Textile drawings/patterns
Silk scarves
Illustrations
Commissions
Here is a piece that didn’t make the cut but has elements I do like – Not every piece is my best work but I learn from them all.

Day 15 { Motivation and goals }
Motivation.
Along with my natural desire to make and create things it helps to surrounded by other Inspiring artists, amazing designers and a need and want inside myself to get better and explore.

Goals? I have a few.

2. Have an actual gallery space/shop.

3. Make beautiful work.

Day 11 { reducing waste }

I made my first stop motion video for todays

#marchmeetthemaker
@joannehawker

I am very conscious of the waste I produce and the the sustainability of what I am producing.
I make decisions everyday that will have an impact on the environment and I hope that I make the right ones.I make sure that the materials that I use are used as fully as possible. Then recycle the rest via textile bin,paper and plastic recycling spots.

I source Eco – friendly products and I am always looking for new alternatives that are better for the environment and can be recycled more efficiently.

When I choose to make more environmentally responsible choices it did effect my costs and as a small maker it can make the difference between a sale or no sale but I still think it is very important and this should not put small maker off ( it is a selling point) that you are making your practice cleaner/greener and I think for the right buyer this will be too.
